Welcome To Kindergarten

May 8, 2020

Dear Incoming Kindergarten Families,

I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your child from all of us at Pond Cove Elementary! Whether you already have children attending school or are preparing for your first opening day as a parent, we hope you find this to be a smooth process.

The first day of school has always been an exciting time for me as both a student and an educator. Particularly special is the beginning of the educational journey for our youngest learners. There will be several opportunities for students and parents to learn more about the wonderful kindergarten experience that we provide at Pond Cove before the next school year begins.

Due to the current pandemic, we are adjusting plans for welcoming our new kindergarten students. Although things may look different from the norm this spring and summer, our commitment to making this an enjoyable and successful start for everyone remains unchanged.

Kindergarten Parent Orientation:

During a typical year we invite new kindergarten parents to school for an evening orientation event. This year, a video presentation will be sent directly to you during the week of May 25. The video will provide an opportunity for you to meet Pond Cove teachers and administration, learn about kindergarten programming, and take a tour of a kindergarten classroom.

Incoming Kindergarten Student Screening Appointments:

Each year incoming kindergarten students are assessed in basic skills before being placed into a specific classroom. There are no expectations of how a student will perform on these assessments. This is simply a way for us to create well-balanced classrooms and plan appropriate instruction as school begins in the fall. This screening is typically done at Pond Cove during the last week of May. Since this is not currently possible, we will screen at a later time. I am continuously monitoring updates from the Governor and CDC and will reach out to you as soon as we have a plan for screening.

Opening Day for Kindergarten Students:

Kindergarten students typically begin their school year three days after grade 1-12 students. This year, kindergarten is  scheduled to start on September 3. I will be sure to keep you updated on plans for reopening Pond Cove as I learn more.

I look forward to meeting you and your incoming kindergarteners as soon as possible. Thank you for your flexibility as we plan during the pandemic.

Sincerely,

Jason Manjourides, Principal
