      Principal's Notes

Week of 12/17/18

Dear Pond Cove Families,

We have much to be thankful for at Pond Cove as we begin the sixteenth and final school week of 2018. I have seen countless examples of both generosity and appreciation amongst students, staff and families throughout the past few weeks. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it all.

Last week, you should have received an email regarding lost and found items. We have several pairs of gloves, hats, boots, jackets, etc. in the lobby right now. Please stop in or encourage your child/children to take a look. These items will be donated on Friday afternoon if not claimed.

There are so many amazing learning opportunities taking place each day at Pond Cove. This week I will highlight our fourth grade ecology study, which includes animal adaptation to the environment. The study began with animals in Robinson Woods and expanded to the adaptation of the Adélie penguin in Antarctica. Last week the study was culminated by skyping with Jean Pennycook, who spends three months each year studying the breeding season of the Adélie penguin. She also has a beautiful book out chronicling her years of research titled, Waiting for Joey, An Antarctic Penguin Journal. It is summer in Antarctica, and the temperature there during our Skype was minus five degrees. We met Jean at 2:00 our time on a Monday, and it was 8:00 in the morning on a Tuesday in Antarctica. Seeing the penguins in their natural environment and learning about Jean's research, as well as the conditions in which she lives for three months, was really amazing. The photo below shows our fourth graders interacting with Jean via Skype in the cafetorium. Thank you to Mrs. MacInnes and the grade four teaching team for making this possible.

I am grateful for your collaborative spirit and invite you all to contact me if I can further support your child’s educational experience. Have a wonderful winter vacation.

Best wishes,

Jason Manjourides, Principal
