Principal's Notes 28 May 2019

Dear Pond Cove Families,

I hope that you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. As we begin week thirty-six at Pond Cove, there are many end-of-year communications coming your way.

Teachers will be working to prepare spring report cards for your viewing, via the PowerSchool parent portal, by the afternoon of June 19. This report will be a summary of your child’s progress in both Habits of Work and academic content areas for this school year.

Habits of Work

In researching desired characteristics in the workplace, the Maine State Department of Education learned that most employers place a high emphasis on employee work habits and ability to work with others effectively. Although our students are very young, our staff understands the importance of students acquiring these skills early in their educational career. Our Responsive Classroom and Peaceful Pond Cove programing supports students as they develop positive work habits. At the K-4 level, we are working to build the foundation for long-term work habits that will serve your child well throughout his/her school career and beyond. New this year, we have consistent Habits of Work and an accompanying grading scale for all K-4 students at Pond Cove.

Pond Cove K-4 Habits of Work Learning Targets

*Exhibits self control, including appropriate voice level.

*Speaks politely and kindly.

*Listens attentively.

*Cooperates and collaborates with others.

*Follows directions and classroom routines.

*Uses time productively.

*Contributes to discussions and activities.

*Completes assigned work.

*Seeks help when needed.

*Keeps trying even when the work is difficult.

Your child’s Habits of Work progress will be reflected using the following scale:

HOW  Key

1 = Occasionally    2 = With guidance    3 = Consistently

Academic Learning Targets

Pond Cove staff are dedicated to ensuring that all students achieve grade-level specific academic learning targets in reading, writing, math, social studies, science and the allied arts by the end of each school year. The academic section of the report card will show your child’s progress toward these learning targets. It is important to emphasize that all targets reflect end-of-year expectations. Therefore, for academic progress reporting, a 1 or 2 is the norm for most children during the winter reporting period. A 3 or 4 are more commonly seen on the end-of-year progress report.

Your child’s progress toward end-of-year academic learning targets for their grade level will be reflected using the following scale:

Academic  Key

NYA = Not Yet  Assessed 1 = Emerging    2 = Progressing     3 = Proficient     4 = Distinguished
