Week of 1/14/19
Dear Pond Cove Families,
Welcome to week nineteen at Pond Cove. Last week I received a few great questions from parents regarding winter playground conditions and playground safety. Our recent weather has resulted in lots of melting and refreezing. This has created a significant amount of ice on surfaces throughout the playground. When there is potential for slippery conditions, the playground is checked and monitored throughout the day. If the playground is too icy, or becomes icy throughout the day due to changing temperatures, we will have inside recess.
Although our hope is for students to engage in outdoor play every day, safety is our number one priority. If you have any questions regarding playground safety, please reach out to me.
As promised, I have included more details regarding this week’s NWEA assessment schedule below.
NWEA Assessment Update:
Last week I mentioned that students in grades 1 - 4 will take the winter benchmark MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA®. The assessments will help us determine your child’s current instructional level and measure their academic growth at this point in the year. Students who have been previously identified as requiring accommodations for testing through a 504 Accommodation Plan or an Individualized Education Plan will take these assessments with accommodations.
For the winter benchmark, students will take the reading and mathematics assessments. You will be notified once your child’s NWEA scores are available for viewing on the test score link in PowerSchool. If you would like to learn more about the MAP Growth test, please visit the NWEA website at NWEA.org/Parent-Toolkit.
Testing is scheduled for this week. The reading and math assessments typically take 45 minutes to 1 hour each. All students in grades 1 - 4 will take the reading assessment on the morning of January 17 and the math assessment on the morning of January 18.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have.

A Reminder About Electronic Devices...
Students should not bring electronic devices from home to school.
Some students bring cell phones in their backpacks to school as a means to communicate with family members after school. Student cell phone use is not allowed during the school day and any cell phones that students bring to school must be kept securely in their backpacks. This includes Smart Watches and other personal electronic devices. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal cell phones.
Thank you for your support.
